Psalm 98: Let’s Make Some Noise!

Posted by on Jan 16, 2018 in Blog | 0 comments

I’ve been caught up in it before. You know, when witnessing greatness of some kind.

We all like it when we’re on the winning side of things, but I’m talking about something far bigger. I’m talking about such greatness that one is ecstatic to have simply been in the moment when the moment became history.

There is this roar; raw elation that erupts when we behold the unthinkable, the Cinderella story, the unbreakable record broken, the performance of a lifetime, that rare occasion so pregnant with magnificence, we are driven to our feet by sheer reflex.

I have to wonder, how often am I moved to such heights as I encounter my God? If He isn’t magnificent – beyond the full extent of my imagination – who is?

His scandalous love of sinful rebels is beyond compare. He has overcome unspeakable odds to rescue a remnant of the most unlikely of characters, even me. He has done for us what we could never do for ourselves, and He is far from finished. He will make all things new. All that was marred by the deadly consequences of Adam’s fall will be as it first was … “Good.”

How am I not perpetually driven to song and shouts at the greatness of our God? He is most assuredly worthy of praise; all the noise a redeemed people can make.

Psalm 97: Ruler

Posted by on Jan 4, 2018 in Blog | 0 comments

Every ruler is eventually deposed, by vote or violence.

Every champion is victor for only a season; perhaps for an era if exceptional.

All dynasties come to the end of the line, relegated to the pages of history and an echo of societal significance.

Even nations and empires – seemingly invincible – come and go (slowly for sure), rising and falling per the ebb and flow of worldly power.

Such is the way of created things; subject to a will greater than our own.

The Lord reigns.

And He does so whether we believe it or not; whether we like it or not.

He is either our greatest rival or safest refuge depending upon our posture toward Him.

“Rejoice in the Lord … give thanks to His holy name.”

Psalm 96: Starstruck

Posted by on Dec 28, 2017 in Blog | 0 comments

Legendary … What person, place or thing leaps to the front of your mind when you read that word?

Is it an artist? An athlete? A world leader or an intellectual giant? How about a majestic mountain range or white sands and an aqua-blue ocean front? Perhaps it’s a wonder of the world or just a wonderful world that garners the attention of all its inhabitants.

Whatever or whomever we deem legendary, we will honor, we will celebrate, we will revere and we will ultimately worship. It’s hard-wired in us. We were made to worship.

Think about it. None of us have to be taught to “sing the praises” of the exceptional; we do it as naturally as breathing. Watch those who seek audience with or an autograph from a celebrity … shortness of breath, nervous laugh, excessive accolades; starstruck.

We are less of who we were made to be when we laud as supreme the talents of mere mortals, while matchless splendor envelopes the One who fashioned those mortals and granted them life.

Fix your gaze on the breathtaking beauty of God, and you will sing along with heaven and earth, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised!”

Psalm 95: The Best of the Best

Posted by on Dec 20, 2017 in Blog | 0 comments

Why settle for anything less than the best? Isn’t that the question advertisers incessantly pose like a battering ram to our hearts and minds? Shoot for the stars! Go for the gusto! Only the best will do!

As cliché as those lines sound, they resonate in us. We naturally marvel at the wonders of this world and cherish all that might be at the top of the heap when the latest standings are published. We instinctively appreciate the finer things of life, and will go to great lengths to have those things for ourselves.

So, if it’s “nothing but the best,” why do we aim ultimate adoration at anything less than God? Why would we ever concede to worship anything or anyone lesser than the highest, greatest, most magnificent of beings?

Why would we not make the most of the One who is responsible for making us?

God truly is the best of the best! The King of kings … the Lord of lords. To honor Him is homage paid to the only One who is actually worthy of such esteem. All will one day bend their knee to Him; some gladly, some out of nothing more than obligation, but all will kneel.

Why settle for anything less than the best?

Psalm 94: Power Trip

Posted by on Dec 16, 2017 in Blog | 0 comments

When power intoxicates the hearts and minds of those who can push others around, they push, but to their own peril. It truly doesn’t seem so in the moment, but you reap what you sow.

Unwittingly, the mighty treat the weak and less fortunate like tools instead of cherishing them as priceless treasure, all under the watchful eye of the One who calls them beloved. They mistake the gifts afforded them for the sake of benevolence (by the One who Owns all things) as perks to which they are entitled, perhaps even owed, as a result of self-proclaimed greatness.

Woe to those who recklessly throw their weight around to their own advantage. They serve themselves to their own demise. Be advised, it’s only a matter of time till those who persecute feel the brunt of retribution.

To the downtrodden and oppressed, know this … God sees, God knows, God cares and He will deliver all who run to Him for refuge.

Psalm 93: Trendy

Posted by on Dec 11, 2017 in Blog | 0 comments

Fashion is all the rage in the era of its hottest designers, but eventually every style is swept into history by a new look.

Architecture has stunned humanity for thousands of years, but new materials and fresh configurations make the creations of the past impressive but outdated.

We have marveled at technology in every age, but all that was cutting edge at one point in time eventually becomes archaic in the wave of new discoveries.

All of our creations, though inspiring to mere mortals, only gains us a glimpse of the one and only Creator’s magnificence. His spectacular attributes are unrivaled by brilliant but finite conceptions of us image bearers.

All that we make is trendy; All that He is is timeless. The quality of God’s character is infinite and unsurpassed by anything and everything He has made. Our greatest achievements are but a whispered testimony to what He brought into existence with a word.

May all that our hands fashion direct our gaze to the One who never will go out of style.
