Psalm 76: Fearsome

huge rockI fear what I cannot control … cannot manipulate … cannot overcome.

It is that immovable object, that insurmountable force which disturbs me. I should say it threatens my thirst for autonomy. It stands in the way of unbridled independence.

Part of me would like to control God. I’d like to know that if push came to shove I could have my way; that is until I need God to be God for my sake.

When I am overwhelmed, overcome, devastated and wrought with despair, I need God to be immovable, insurmountable, unchanging and in complete control. I need Him to be fearsome if He is to be a strong tower and a safe haven for me in the storms of life that expose my helpless condition.

Don’t play with fire.

Don’t run with scissors in your hands.

Don’t drink and drive.

Cautions provoke the most interesting responses … curiosity, gratitude, resentment, even defiance. There is that something in us that rises up and believes that bad things happen to bad people who just aren’t as smart, gifted, savvy … as we are. I imagine that most of those who bear the pain of ignoring words of warning truly believed they were the exception. Oh how I bet they would love the opportunity to make that choice again!

Our culture is growing more and more daring all the time; ignoring the blinking yellow lights of human history. If nothing else, history has shown that drifting from God’s design (timeless truth) is costly, perhaps not immediately, but eventually. C.H. Spurgeon insightfully concluded, “Sin would have fewer takers if its consequences occurred immediately.”

As our world chooses the “wild side,” we would do well to heed the words of the prophet Isaiah:

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,

who put darkness for light and light for darkness,

who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20)

Let’s not look to our government, our celebrities, our power brokers, or our media moguls to shape our beliefs or define our morality. There is One – and only one – Way, Truth and Life (John 14:6). His name is Jesus, and His word is “a lamp to our feet and a light to our path” (Psalm 119:105) … showing us the way through perilous temptation to “green pastures and still waters” (Psalm 23).

A word to the wise … “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” Galatians 6:7–8
